Ganguabai kathiawadi is an upcoming Indian Hindi language biographical crime drama. The movie is directed and produced by Sanjay Leela Bhansali along with Jayantilal Gada.
The movie stars Alia Bhatt along with Ajay Devgn and Emraan Hashmi who are featured for cameo appearances. The film also casts actors like Vijay Raaz, who previously worked with Alia Bhatt in the film Gullyboy. Shantanu Maheshwari is also a part of the screen of Gangubai Kathiawadi.
The movie is a biopic of Gangubai Harjivandas, who was born in Gujarat. She was one of the most dreaded women of Mumbai's Underworld who ran many brothels during the golden years of Bombay city in the 1960s. She was popularly known as 'Madam of Kamathipura' for being an influential pimp in the Underworld city. The film is based on Hussain Zaidi's book 'The Mafia Queens of Mumbai' . The film will revolve around Gangubai's life spent in mumbai's red-light district .
The story goes as young Ganga dreamed to become an actress in the Bollywood industry , in order to fulfil her dreams, and so she ran away with her father’s clerk against her father’s will towards the dream city. Unfortunately, she was ticked and sold into prostitution by the man, Ramnik Lal at the city’s red-light area, Kamathipura’ for Rs 500.
This is when ganga renamed herself as Gangu and began her journey. Gangubai was a powerful house owner, drug peddler, criminal, politician, don, sex worker, businesswoman all in all, a controversial figure from Kathiawar.
The movie trailer was released on 27th Feb which left a phenomenal impression on the viewers and are excited to see the all new avatar of Alia Bhatt in the form of Gangubai. The film is all set to be released on 30th July 2021 in the theaters.
The filmmaker has confirmed that there will be no change in the date of release of the film . Alia's most awaited film' Bramhastra ' which was supposed of be released in 2020, but had to postponed due to COVID-19 is also scheduled to be released this year soon.
