Migraine is a neurological disorder that causes severe throbbing pain and pulsing sensation, on one side of the head. Migraine can last for hours to days. Sometimes it is characterized by nausea and vomiting.
The pain can be so critical that it interferes with your daily activities. Some of the people may have a warning symptom known as an aura which includes visual disturbances or tingling on the face or in the arm.
Signs and symptoms of migraine: -
· Mood changes.
· Constipation.
· Depression.
· Fatigue.
· Food cravings.
· Neck stiffness.
· Irritability.
· Yawning frequently.
· Increased thirst and urination.
Some people experience a warning symptom known as Aura. It occurs before migraines. Aura includes visual disturbances, vision loss, difficulty in speaking, hearing noises, uncontrollable jerking.
A migraine attack normally lasts from 4 to 72 hours if not treated. During a migraine attack you may encounter:
· Pain on one side of your head usually, but can also occur on both sides.
· Throbbing pain.
· Sensitivity may occur to light, sound, smell, and touch.
· Vomiting and nausea.
Here are some causes or triggers of migraine:
· Hormonal changes in women – Changes in estrogen level during menstruation can trigger a migraine attack in many women.
Also, studies have found out that certain drinks and beverages like alcohol and wine can trigger a headache that may end up in Migraine.
· Stress – Stress and anxiety can cause pressure on the mind which may trigger migraines.
· Sensory stimuli – Bright light, loud noises, a strong smell can trigger migraines in some people.
· Food additives – Food additives used in packed food like preservative monosodium glutamate (MSG) and sweetener aspartame may trigger migraines.
Treatment includes:
1. You may take medications like Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).
2. You should make some lifestyle adjustment and reduce stress level.
3. You should go to the doctor and take prescribed medications to ease the symptoms.
4. Prescription drugs will help with nausea and vomiting.
