Birthmarks are the type of discoloration that appears on your skin at birth. These are usually noncancerous. They can be anywhere on your body or face. They vary in color, size, appearance, and shape. These are permanent and sometimes may get larger over time.
Birthmarks are of different types: -
· Vascular birthmarks
These occur if blood vessels in a particular area of your skin don’t form the way they should be formed.
· Pigmented birthmarks
These occur when you have more pigment in one part of your skin than in others. It includes:
1. Moles – It ranges from pink to black or brown color. They are of different sizes and types of round shape.
2. Café au lait spots– These are oval and are often pale brown. These may grow larger but usually fade.
3. Mongolian blue spots– These are bluish-gray flat spots that mostly occur in people with naturally dark skin.
Here are some ways for the removal of birthmarks.
· Laser therapy
This method is used to remove or lighten them. This method is successful when started in infancy. Due to this therapy sometimes, temporary swelling may occur.
· Corticosteroids
They are anti-inflammatory drugs, that act directly in the blood vessels helping to shorten the size of the birthmark.
· Surgery
Some birthmarks can be removed by surgery. These include large moles and very deep haemangiomas.
While most of the birthmarks are harmless and do not require any removal, some can be uncomfortable because of their appearance. Vascular birthmarks may lead to an increased risk for a certain medical condition, such as skin cancer. These are needed to be monitored and also sometimes be removed.
