Anorexia Nervosa, also known as Anorexia, is an eating disorder characterized by abnormally low body weight, in which a person always has a fear of gaining weight. The person often has an unrealistic body image. A person suffering from Anorexia Nervosa, intentionally restricts their food intake, in a fear of gaining weight or desire to lose weight.
Food restrictions can lead to nutritional deficiencies, which affect the overall physical and mental health of the person. This disorder often appears during the teenage years or early adulthood. It is often thought that Anorexia Nervosa affects females more than men or it is connected to females only but, it can affect people of either sex or gender.
PRODROMES: -
It involves physical as well as emotional symptoms. It may be difficult to notice each symptom as the different individual may have different symptoms
1. Physical Symptoms includes-
· Extreme weight loss
· Fatigue or tiredness
· Insomnia
· Constipation
· Abdominal pain
· Yellowish skin
· Cold sensitivity
· Dehydration
· Cyanosis (Bluish skin)
· Tachycardia or Bradycardia
· Infertility
1. Emotional Symptoms includes-
· Skipping meals
· Eating in less quantity
· Denial of hunger or refusing to eat
· Frequent checking their weight
· Lack of emotions
· Social Withdrawal
. Irritation
CAUSES: -
· Criticism about their weight and body shape
· Low self-esteem
· Anxiety
· Sexual Abuse
· Peer- Pressure
· Trauma
· The pressure to fit in the society
· Body Shaming
TREATMENT
· Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), helps the person find new ways of thinking and knowing themselves.
· Counseling helps to express their feeling and emotion.
· Meditation helps in managing stress and anxiety.
· Nutrition supplements should be given to treat nutritional deficiencies.
All these help in improving the condition of the patient and help them to overcome this disorder. Friends and Family play an important role in treating this condition. It is very challenging for the person to overcome Anorexia Nervosa, so you should always help the person to overcome it.
