The liver is a large, meaty organ only found in vertebrates. It weighs about 3 pounds, is reddish-brown in color, and feels rubbery when touched. It is protected by the rib cage. There are two main functions of the liver the first being filtering the blood coming from the digestive system before sending it to the rest of the body. And the second, it metabolizes various food and drugs and also detoxifies the chemicals.
The liver contains hepatocytes which carry out the metabolic processes. The liver metabolizes carbohydrates, fats, proteins. It synthesizes an alkaline fluid known as bile, which metabolizes fats. It is the major site of converting excess proteins and carbohydrates into fatty acids and triglycerides which are stored in adipose tissue.
If liver metabolism is altered, then there will be a chance that your body does not get rid of some toxins produced in the body. If the concentration of carbohydrates increases, it may either lead to increased sugar levels and risk of heart diseases. Here are some ways to keep your liver healthy and enhance its metabolism.
· Drink green tea
Green tea helps in fat metabolism which indirectly increases the liver metabolic rate. You should consume 1-2 cups of green tea daily.
· Take a balanced diet
You should avoid taking high calorie-food, refined carbohydrates, and sugar. You should take a balanced diet which includes fiber (Fruits, vegetables, whole-grain bread, and cereals).
· Regular exercise
It is always advisable to exercise regularly as it helps in burning triglycerides and also reduces liver fat.
· Eating at consistent times
If you eat at a regular time, then the body has balance and regularity and can maintain metabolic balance. If you eat a lot and then go for long periods without eating, your body may burn calories slowly and store more fat cells resulting in excessive weight gain.
· Staying hydrated
Drinking water is essential for your body to properly function. It is necessary for metabolism and also helps in weight loss.
· Practice Yoga
Yoga helps in reducing stress which may affect hormone levels. It may cause more production of cortisol, the hormone that regulates appetite which influences metabolism.
Anybody can increase their metabolism by simply making healthful changes to their lifestyle and diet.
